1The fears expressed above for the future of democracy in Czechoslovakia were unfortunately soon confirmed by events. The Communists in fact made a determined political onslaught on the Slovak Democrats in the autumn of 1947. This was not successful, but it proved but a dress rehearsal for the main Communist attack, which came in February 1948, and resulted in the destruction of multiparty government and its replacement by Communist dictatorship of the type already established in the rest of Eastern Europe.
